Wireless networking tips

While it’s relatively easy to follow the directions to set up your wireless router and start browsing, you shouldn’t stop there. Use these tips to make sure your network is as strong, secure, and safe as possible. Several of these tips come from Microsoft’s “10 tips for improving your wireless network,” along with other locations around the web.1. Change the channel number. Wi-fi routers are capable of transmitting on different channels, but most are set with the same default. This can cause radio interference with other equipment on the same channel, so it’s easier to simply change it.2. Add a Wi-Fi repeater. These devices improve the range of your wireless network. Place it halfway between your router and computer for best results.3. Keep your firmware updated. Check the manufacturer’s site regularly to see if a new router update has been released. These updates often boost the performance of your network by a considerable amount. Your network adapter manufacturer may also release updates for your computer’s driver.4. Turn your network off during long vacations. Turning your router off frequently can be a hassle, but during extended absences, it’s a good idea to simply block access altogether. Turn off the router or, if using a router via Ethernet connection, see if you can disable the Wi-Fi functionality.5. Upgrade to the latest IEEE Wi-Fi standardcurrently 802.11n. This will involve purchasing new equipment, but you’ll see noticeable results after you do so.6. Avoid obstructions to your wireless signal, including metal, walls, and floors. Routers get progressively weaker the closer they are to any of these obstacles.7. Keep reading AltRedWirelessCenter.com.
