People who regularly use video game consoles for entertainment (either via games or the Blu-ray capabilities of the Playstation 3) understand the hassle that comes with trying to find a spot for their device where it can still be connected to a broadband modem. Why waste time worrying when you can connect your console to the wireless network? For users of the Playstation 3, it’s a very short process to go from offline to clear wireless internet.

  • Start by making sure your wireless network is active and your PS3′s Ethernet cable is unplugged.
  • Turn on the console and select “Network Settings” from the “Settings” option.
  • Go to the “Internet Connection Settings” tab. When the system alerts you that you will be disconnected from the internet, select “Yes.”
  • When the system asks what type of installation you prefer, select “Easy.”
  • When the system asks what type of connection you have, select “Wireless.”
  • Select “Scan” on the next screen to search for available wireless networks.
  • Select your network and enter your security key.
  • Select the “Test Connection” option to make sure your PS3 is connected.

It’s also very simple to connect your Xbox 360 to a wireless network.

  • Connect a wireless adapter to the console.
  • Turn on the console and go to the wireless settings screen (System>Network Settings>Edit Settings).
  • If your router is broadcasting your SSID network name, you can now select it from the screen. Otherwise, enter the SSID here.
  • Choose “Infrastructure” as your Network Mode.
  • Set your Security Type to whichever security settings your router is using.
  • Save the settings and test the network.

For the Wii:

  • Turn on the Wii and wait for the main menu to appear.
  • Click the Wii button in the bottom left corner and select Wii settings.
  • Go to the Internet page and select “Connection Settings.”
  • Select the connection that says “none” and specify “wireless” as your preferred connection type.
  • The Wii will search for available wireless networks. Select yours and enter your password. Save your settings and test the connection.

Wireless internet connections are great for transporting your console to friends’ houses, especially when you can bring your network with you with a portable modem.
